A new iPhone app released this week connects users with Exodus International, an antigay group advocating reparative therapy and “ex-gay” solutions.
Apple rated the app 4+, meaning it has no objectionable content. However, LGBT activists are arguing that if Apple doesn’t allow racist or anti-Semitic apps, it shouldn’t allow homophobic apps like this one. The Advocate reports:
In the petition to Apple executives including CEO Steve Jobs, Truth Wins Out officials write that Exodus “targets vulnerable, suicide-prone LGBT youth with the message that their sexual orientation is a ‘sin that will make your heart sick’ and a ‘counterfeit,’ contributing to and legitimizing the ostracism of these youth from their families.” They note that Apple does not allow racist or anti-Semitic applications, so allowing the Exodus app represents a double standard, and they call on the company to remove it.
I’m sick and tired of this double standard, particularly when it comes to Apple’s ignorance of how they can affect so many people. If you’re frustrated by this too, sign this petition asking Apple to take down the app. There’s enough homophobia out there; Apple doesn’t need to perpetuate it.
443 signatures still needed as of now! GOGOGO!!!
